American Reformation Church Prayer Journal 99
This past week most of our family went to Scotland on quest. 21 years ago, I climbed a mountain in Scotland near Loch Ness at Fort Augustus, planted a cross, and a family memorial time capsule that captured our family’s faith, heritage, and legacy. Through the years, I tried a few times to get our family to retrace the clues to discover our family’s monument. Twice it failed to happen, but last week the Lord kept the door open. We went on family vision and mission to rediscover and repair our family’s testimonial memorial. God makes everything beautiful in His time (Ecclesiaties 3:11).
It was an incredible adventure. There were tremendous scenic views, interesting historical places to visit, good food, and wonderful fellowship.
Through the years, I spoke often of Scotland to encourage our family and let them know I left for them a quest that ties them to this blessed land, our faith, and Kingdom heritage. When we found the memorial and repaired it after 21 years, the penny dropped for our family. Their faith became sight and it had a profound impact on the souls of our children and grandchildren.
We found the old cross and previous time capsule and brought it home. We plan on going through it if it is still possible to decipher. The weather took its toll. Beside the rebuilt cross, we also planted another time capsule. This time it not only has our family tree, but each individual family wrote to their posterity about their love for them and the godly heritage they have in Christ’s Kingdom.
For my part, the vision is fulfilled and the mission is now accomplished. This is now their mountain, their memorial, and their future and hope. Prayerfully, they will go on quest in the future with their children to retrace the clues, find the memorial, and have that special bonding time with the Lord and their families.
Obviously, the Bible has much to say about family heritage and the duty to faithfully pass the faith to our children with a multi-generational Kingdom vision. Psalms 127 assures us that children are God’s reward and blessed is the man that has his quiver full of them (Psalms 127:3-5). Psalms 128 declares this blessing, “Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the very heart of your house, your children like olive plants all around your table. Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord” (Psalms 128:3, 4).
Psalms 78 further reveals this responsibility to parents, “For He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; That the generation to come might know them, the children who would be born, that they may arise and declare them to their children, that they may set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments” (Psalms 78:5-7).
Growing up, our 13 children were trained in the Scriptures. We read through the Bible together every year. This was the time as a father to disciple and train our children in the word, way, and will of God. All the time as parents we were praying and interceding that God would watch over His Word and perform it in the souls of our children. We constantly reminded the Lord of His Word in Proverbs, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Praise His Holy Name. He has been faithful and true to His promises that are yes and amen (2 Corinthians 1:20).
