ARC PRAYER MEETING:

This past Sunday at the American Reformation Church, we acknowledged our 250th-year anniversary as a nation. It was a time to remember God’s mighty acts of deliverance in establishing our nation, repent of our national sins, and renew our Covenant with Almighty God. We took time at the end to humble ourselves before God’s Throne of Grace to confess and repent of our personal, family, church, and national sins and to humbly implore God to secure a future and hope for our posterity.

George Washington keenly aware of the notion of posterity in our nation once challenged his fledgling army that was tattered, cold, weary, and dying of disease, “The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of this army. We have, therefore, to resolve to conquer or die.” In Washington’s generation they laid their lives down for the unborn, while this generation of Americans lays down the life of the unborn so we can have a better life. It’s a lie from the pit of hell and God defeat this evil and cleanse our land of bloodguilt.

Biblically, prayer played an important role in all three Rs, remember, repent, and renew. Psalm 77:11–15 remembers God's mighty works, "I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples. You with your arm redeemed your people."

Perhaps the greatest prayer of national repentance is recorded in the book of Daniel. The prophet of the Lord was faint and sick for days concerning the visions of the Lord. He didn’t just lie there on his sick bed. He went to work to seek the Lord on the behalf of his nation that was still in captivity and needing God’s delivering power to rescue them once again.

He stated, “Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. And I prayed to the Lord my God, and made confession, and said, “O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments” (Daniel 9:3-5).

He concluded the prayer with these desperate words, “O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, for Your city and Your people are called by Your name” (Daniel 9:19).

In the days of Asa the king, the nation of Israel renewed their covenant with Almighty God. The situation was dire. Israel was in deep trouble. They had been without the true God, without a teaching priest, and without law (2 Chronicles 15:3).  There was no peace and everyone was in turmoil. It was that wretched state they renewed the covenant of the Lord.

2 Chronicles 15:12-15 declares, “Then they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul; and whoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. Then they took an oath before the Lord with a loud voice, with shouting and trumpets and rams’ horns. And all Judah rejoiced at the oath, for they had sworn with all their heart and sought Him with all their soul; and He was found by them, and the Lord gave them rest all around.”

Our nation is sick at heart. Our wounds seem incurable. We wandered far from the Father’s House. Perhaps, it is time America renew our commitment to be One Nation Under God.
